Women in Trades: Meet Tahlia, Our First-Year Apprentice

Women in Trades

Meet Tahlia, Service Today’s newest plumber and proud first-year apprentice – proving that it’s never too late to follow your passion. After starting her career in real estate, Tahlia realised she wanted to do something more hands-on, and what better way than joining the team that keeps Aussie homes running smoothly?

Since joining Service Today, she’s swapped open homes for open pipes and hasn’t looked back. With a strong work ethic, a curious mind, and a determination to master her trade, Tahlia is quickly becoming one to watch. Her enthusiasm and willingness to learn inspires everyone around her, showing that there’s no one “type” of person who belongs in the trades.

We sat down with Tahlia to chat about her journey from property to plumbing, her first weeks on the tools, and what it’s really like being a woman breaking into the trade industry. Spoiler alert: she’s loving every second.

Getting Started
What made you decide to trade in real estate for plumbing?
I wanted a fresh start and a completely different challenge. After years in real estate, I realised I wanted something more hands-on – something that kept me moving, learning, and building real skills every day.

How did you first hear about Service Today, and what drew you to the team?
Once I discovered my passion for plumbing, I started looking for a company that really supports its apprentices. Service Today stood out straight away – the team seemed so welcoming, and it felt like the perfect place to start my career.

What’s been the biggest surprise since starting your apprenticeship?
That a plumber’s best friend really is a shovel! I definitely didn’t expect to spend so much time digging – but it’s all part of the fun.

On the Job
What’s a typical day like for you as a first-year apprentice?
Each day’s a mix of meeting different tradesmen, picking up new tips and tricks, and (of course) a few too many trips back and forth to the van!

Any jobs that have really stuck with you so far – funny, weird, or just unforgettable?
Definitely the time I took off the wrong valve and got a full face of water. Safe to say, I won’t be making that mistake again!

What’s something you’ve learned that you didn’t expect to enjoy as much as you do?
Unblocking drains and using the jetter! There’s something really satisfying about firing up the camera, finding the blockage, and blasting it clean.

Breaking Barriers
As a woman in a trade, what would you say to other women thinking about giving it a go?
Learn how to give and take a bit of banter – and don’t be afraid to hold your own. Once you do, you’ll realise how fun and rewarding it is.

How do you feel the industry is changing when it comes to women in trades?
It’s amazing to see more women jumping into the industry. Times are changing, and tradesmen are far more supportive and respectful – it’s great to see that shift happening.

Fun & Personal
What’s your go-to pump-up song before work?
Run the World – Beyoncé! Gotta make sure these tradies know who’s boss. 💪

If you could describe Service Today in three words, what would they be?
Welcoming. Supportive. Fun.

What’s your dream goal once you finish your apprenticeship?
To run my own plumbing company one day and have a team of my own – passing on what I’ve learned and showing other women they can do it too.

Any secret skills or hobbies outside of work that might surprise people?
I love riding motorbikes and spending time with my family – it’s my way to unwind after a busy week.

Final Thoughts
What do you love most about being part of the Service Today team?
Honestly, the people. The technicians are always happy to teach me something new, and the whole team, including dispatch, makes me feel right at home. It’s a really fun, supportive place to be.
