Everything You Need To Know About Your Blocked Kitchen Sink

A blocked kitchen sink is a standard call for our plumbers. A blocked kitchen sink can send even the calmest homeowner into a panic- most homes only have one kitchen. The sink is used day in, day out and a blockage can be a huge inconvenience. Here’s what you need to know!

Why Do I Have A Blocked Kitchen Sink?

When it comes to a kitchen sink, the most common reason for a blockage is grease. Small food scraps are likely to be flushed down the drain through regular washing. Small scraps will probably go unnoticed most of the time. For years or months, you might never notice a problem. However, over time grease builds up and causes a bigger, tougher blockage and that is when you start to have problems.

How do you know if you have a blockage? The first sign is usually a slow draining sink. It is subtle, but you will notice that the water will not drain quickly enough and the sink could start to fill up when you are using it. In this case, if you were to turn off the tap momentarily, the water would drain, but if not your sink would over flow.

Unfortunately, the only reason for the water in your sink to take any longer than normal to empty is an obstruction in the pipe work. The good news is that this first stage of blockage is the BEST time to call a plumber. If you notice a slow draining sink, call a plumber immediately. It is the time when unblocking will be easiest and quickest. Therefore, least expensive and least disruptive to your home, don’t wait!

Aside from grease and food scrap build ups and paper bags with logo, blockages to your kitchen sink can also be the result of larger objects stuck in the pipework- toys, cutlery or cooking utensils, (we’ve seen it all!). If a bigger object is trapped, you will likely notice immediately and will need to contact a professional.

How To Unblock A Kitchen Sink

Our licensed plumbers have various approaches to unblocking kitchen sinks. In most homes, we will use one of three methods;

1. A plunger and sulphuric drain acid.

2. Plumbers mini auger or mini eel.

3. High-pressure water jet.

There are many online DIY’s that promise cleared drains in minutes. Some natural remedies are worth a try. However, be warned that most off the shelf drain cleaners can do more harm than good.

The best (and only 100% effective!) way to deal with a blocked kitchen sink is to call a licensed plumber. If you’re ever stuck, contact our licensed, professional, local plumbers. We offer upfront, fixed pricing, and same day service. Book online or call 1300 737 842 anytime, 24/7.
