Australian homes use a variety of different methods for Winter heating. From central gas, to plug in gas, reverse cycle split systems and portable electric heaters, the options are plenty.
The two most common power sources are natural gas or electricity. Like your hot water system, you will need to consider your specific needs before deciding whether a gas or an electric heater is right for heating your space this winter.

Gas Heating
Pros
- Good value for money – The running costs associated with gas powered appliances are much lower than that of electrical.
- Can effectively heat for long periods – Most gas heaters have adjustable settings that allow you to choose the temperature and set timers.
- Great for heating medium sized spaces – open plan living and tall ceilings can be a challenge, the right sized gas heater will do a great job here.
- Energy efficient – Gas heaters produce approximately one-third of the carbon footprint that electric heaters produce.
- Gas heaters come with a star rating – this informs you of the efficiency of your heater and you can choose the level best suited to you before purchasing.
Cons
- Fuel burning – Gas heaters work by burning fuel, emitting carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas.
- Not recommended for use in small or poorly ventilated rooms- Because of the carbon monoxide emission, a flue must be installed to provide a safe exhaust for fumes.
- Gas access required- While most suburban homes in Australia are connected to gas mains, those who aren’t will require LPG tanks to run a gas heater. If you are considering gas heating and do not currently have access to gas, call us, we can help!
Electric Heating
Pros
- Portable- Electric heaters can be moved around as necessary since there is no need for a flue.
- Inexpensive to buy- Depending on the size and brand, electric heaters can be the most inexpensive option.
- Electric powered- If your home has an electricity supply, you can run an electric heater.
- No fumes or gases produced- No need to be vented outside.
- Great for small spaces- No ventilation risks, great for under desks or in small rooms.
- Good for heating individual rooms- A room will heat quickly with the door closed and the heater inside. This isn’t an option with gas heaters.
- Effective “boosting” method- If you are struggling to heat a larger space, adding an electric heater is quick, easy and can be very effective.
Cons
- Overheat risk- Exposed elements can easily overheat and cause a fire/electrocution.
- Lack of settings- Many models will have minimal/no programmable settings. This means you can’t choose the most efficient setting for your needs and room size.
- Often lighter in weight- Higher chance of tipping over and causing a fire.
- Runs off electricity- if the power goes out, so will your heater.
There are many factors to consider when making a purchase. Although you may be tempted to use the same heating method as you did last year, it’s always good practice to check out what’s new- there may be something better suited to your home.
