The Western Suburbs of Melbourne is the region located directly to the west and south-west of Melbourne’s Central Business District. Suburbs include Essendon, Flemington, Footscray, Keilor, Melton, Sydenham, Werribee, Williamstown and Yarraville. This region is easily accessible by public transport, on the train and bus, and is well connected to the city centre and Geelong via the Princes Freeway. This district has long been considered the more working-class side of Melbourne’s city, due to its close proximity to the factories and warehouses in the nearby industrial area. However, there has been major and consistent development in the area over the years, and has enjoyed a rise in the immigrant population. This region is primarily home to a large number of Vietnamese and East African people, and is known as a hub for the growing immigrant community. The region also has a suburb founded in 1835 before Melbourne named Williamstown, which served as the main harbour for the city in the 19th and 20th centuries.
