With the trade industry seeing a lack of diversity, with only 2.5% of plumbers being female, we asked Lauren why she chose to become a plumber with Service Today.
What made you choose plumbing as a trade?
Before I started plumbing I was actually working in health care. I started to fall out of love with nursing and eventually became unhappy working in the field. My brother was an apprentice plasterer at the time and supported me to explore the trade environment. I locked myself into a roofing apprenticeship, but luckily before I formally enrolled my previous boss suggested plumbing. I did a year of roofing and then started my plumbing apprenticeship.
What did your family say when you informed them of your choice?
My parents were not impressed at all originally. I wanted to drop out of university and work a “man’s job.” That was almost heart attack news to them. I had my brother’s support and eventually my parents came to accept my choice. It took a while, but since then they’ve been encouraging and supportive of my career choice.
What's the thing you like the most about being a plumber?
Being a plumber can be dirty work but there’s also clean work. I absolutely love the satisfaction of installing new tapware, hot water systems and fixtures. I find it satisfying and gives me a sense of accomplishment, especially when comparing the old to the new.
What has been the most challenging part of choosing a trade?
Personally, it isn’t working with other male plumbers and electricians, it’s dealing with the builders, customers and other trades that have more of a closed off mindset. They acknowledge the males that I’m working with and almost disregard my presence. Even though it’s annoying and frustrating at times, I know I can’t change the stigma and culture surrounding trades.
