DIY – How to Change Your Light Bulb

You mentioned the blown light bulb in the kitchen. He said he knew and would ‘get round to it’. It’s now almost been a month. You’ve been trying to cook mama’s risotto recipe in the dark and it just doesn’t taste the same. “Because there’s no light”, you sigh.

Rather than subject yourself to this sickening game of disappointment roulette, take matters into your own hands. Be the light that shines at the end of a newly replaced bulb.

A study found that 84% of adults don’t know how to change a bulb. It is one of the easiest D-I-Y tasks you can complete, taking only a few minutes out of your day. We get it. Knowing how to change the light bulb is a low priority item when compared to fighting for equal pay and saving the environment, so not everyone knows how. Don’t worry, this is a judgement free, safe space. We all start somewhere.

Laws in Australia governing electrical work are strict, and for good reason. Electrical work is dangerous if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing. For this reason it is important to leave such jobs to fully licensed, trained and experienced electrical tradespeople. This being said, there are certain tasks that you as a non-licensed, independent and woke individual are allowed to do in your home.

To safely replace a bulb, follow these steps:

Step 1: Turn off the power and let the bulb cool

It may seem obvious, but ensuring the power is off before you go anywhere near the light bulb is the most crucial step. This doesn’t mean switching the light switch off, but turning off the power to the light from the fuse box. Check the box, avoid the shock.

If the light bulb has recently died, it is likely hot. Allow the bulb to cool for a few minutes before you begin handling it.

Step 2: Grab a stool, stepladder, or secure chair

If the light bulb is on the ceiling, use a stool, step ladder or secure chair. This will avoid any unnecessary straining which can result in breaking the light bulb, cutting your hand or damaging the fixture.

Get yourself into a comfortable and safe position before trying to remove the light bulb from the socket.

Step 3: Remove the dead bulb

There are two different types of light bulbs you will come across, each having their own respective methods of removal and replacement.

Screw fitting

Twist the light bulb anticlockwise until it is free. If the light bulb has been in place over a long period of time, the screw section may have rusted. If this happens, the light bulb section will likely come off. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the base of the bulb from the socket carefully. Do not use your fingers!

Bayonet magnet

Push the light bulb upwards and turn anticlockwise until it comes free.

Step 4: Replace the bulb

Gently twist the new light bulb into place. Be mindful not to push too hard, causing it to break.

Note: it is important you check the type of bulb you are using and ensure the power rating matches your requirements before you start this step.

Step 5: Let there be light!

Turn the power back on and switch the light switch on. If you completed the previous steps correctly and have used the appropriate light bulb, you should have a working light bulb.

Step 6: Throw out the old bulb

Bulbs are fragile, and can easily break. Rather than throwing it directly into the bin, wrap it up with something to protect the bin bag and your hand.

Congratulations, you are now a part of the 26% elite. You don’t need no man or woman to replace your bulbs. SHINE BRIGHT.
