“How do I find a reliable local electrician?”

Before you hire a local electrician Brisbane, make sure you know exactly how to find someone who will do the job well and for the right price. Here are our top tips.
Before you hire a local electrician Brisbane, make sure you know exactly how to find someone who will do the job well and for the right price. Here are our top tips.
1 icon

Ask for recommendations

Start by asking friends, family, neighbours in Brisbane, or coworkers for electrician recommendations. They may have had a positive experience with a local electrician.

2 icon

Search online

The companies that come up high in search results put a lot of effort into their business so you know they will take their work seriously.

3 icon

Check the electrician’s credentials

Ensure that the electrician you're considering is licensed, insured and has the necessary qualifications.

4 icon

Read reviews and testimonials

Look for customer reviews and testimonials on Google. Check that the reviews are recent and that they don’t look fake (it’s generally easy to spot a fake review because it uses words normal people don’t write!).

5 icon

Get multiple quotes

Find at least 3 electricians that will provide an estimate of the costs involved with your standard or emergency electrical job. When you compare quotes, look for details about what is included in the services they will be charging you for.

6 icon

Ask questions

When speaking with your local electrician, ask a few questions to gauge his knowledge and level of experience. You’ll get a feel pretty quickly if you seem to know what he’s talking about or not.

7 icon

Ask for references and check reviews

We know it is hard to find a trusted and reliable electrician. We suggest asking for references from friends or family if they have used the services before, and have a look into our social media channels.

8 icon

Review the estimate

Some customers fear that electricians may overcharge them for their services, especially if they are not familiar with the going rate for electrical work. This can be exacerbated by a lack of transparency about pricing or a feeling of being taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors.

9 icon

Look at presentation

Presentation is usually a sign of the electricians or the company's standard and quality. Take a look out if their general branding is consistent with the tradesmen that come out to your home. It is most likely if the electrician is neat and presentable they will be more honest and the work quality should reflect their professional presentation. Service Today employees will arrive in company branded vehicles and are in clean uniform.

“How much do electricians charge?”

When hiring an electrician, the cost can vary significantly depending on various factors. It's important to be aware of these factors to have a clear understanding of the payment and invoicing methods before agreeing to any electrical work.

Electricians don’t always have a standardised pricing approach. Familiarise yourself with the various payment and invoicing methods used by electricians before committing to any work. This will help you avoid any surprises when receiving the final bill.

Balancing Cost and Quality

Balancing Cost and Quality

Remember, while it's natural to be concerned about the cost of hiring an electrician, it is equally important to consider the quality of service and expertise provided. By engaging the services of a reputable and experienced electrician, you can have peace of mind knowing that the job will be done efficiently and to a high standard. Electrical is a service-oriented business, where electricians visit your home or workplace to fix or replace electrical systems. The pricing structure often takes into account the level of service and the speed at which the electrician performs the work, ensuring a satisfactory electrical experience.

Additional Cost Influencing Factors

The perception that ‘electricians are expensive’ is a common one, but it is essential to recognise that electricians must factor in travel time and general business costs. These expenses include covering bills, paying themselves or their employees, providing training, and having some profit left over. The electrician's charges are also influenced by factors such as the location of the job, the complexity of the work, and the electrician's level of experience.

By gaining a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing electrical costs and familiarising yourself with the electrician’s pricing structure, you can make informed decisions and ensure transparency in the payment process.

In general, electricians charge in the following ways:

The service call fee also known as the call out fee

The call-out fee covers the electrician’s time and travel expenses to reach your property. This fee is typically charged in addition to the hourly rate or flat rate for the actual work performed.

Variations in Call-out Fees

Variations in Call-out Fees

The call-out fee can vary significantly, ranging from $50 to $150 or even higher. It's crucial to note that the cheaper the call-out fee or the absence of a call-out fee does not necessarily mean the overall cost of the work will be lower. Other factors, such as the complexity of the job and the electrician’s level of experience also influence the final cost.

Extra Fees for Special Situations

In certain situations, such as requiring an electrician outside of regular business hours, during weekends, or on holidays, you may incur an additional fee for emergency or after-hours services. These fees could add up to $480 or more for the service call alone. It's essential to understand and ask about these additional charges beforehand to avoid any unexpected costs.

What to look out for:

  • Beware of companies that don’t charge a call-out fee, as they may compensate for it in other ways or lack efficiency and necessary tools.
  • Ensure transparency in the pricing structure, you can request a breakdown of charges and understand what the call-out fee covers before booking the job.
  • If you are paying a service call fee make sure you are getting value for money. For example: how fast the service can be done or if the electricians carry spare parts in their truck so they save you time and money overall. The cheapest option may not always provide the best long-term solution.
  • Seek competitive quotes to ensure fair pricing for your emergency or after-hours electrical needs.

Electricians charging per hour

An hourly rate can vary significantly, typically ranging from $65 to $210 per hour or even higher. Factors such as location, experience, and the nature of the work all contribute to the variation in rates.

Minimum Charge Concept

Minimum Charge Concept

Some electricians may have a minimum charge for their services. This means that even if the job is completed in less time than the minimum, you will still be responsible for paying the predetermined amount. Make sure to inquire about any minimum charges when discussing the details of the job with an electrician.

Potential Issues with Hourly Rates

Potential Issues with Hourly Rates

Charging by the hour can sometimes create an incentive for electricians to prolong the work unnecessarily, leading to higher costs for customers and a longer completion time.

Service Today's Fixed Pricing System

Recognising this issue, at Service Today, we have chosen a different approach. We believe that charging by the hour is unfair to our valued customers. When the pricing is based on hourly rates, different customers end up paying different amounts for the exact same work.

Instead, we have implemented a fixed pricing system for all our services. This approach ensures that all customers receive the same transparent and reasonable rates for the work required. Our focus is on providing quality service without compromising on fairness or efficiency.

By charging by the job rather than by the hour, we eliminate any concerns about time-related pricing discrepancies. Additionally, having someone constantly monitoring the time can hinder the electrician’s ability to focus on delivering an excellent job, as it may create the perception of inflating the bill.

Service Today guarantees a high-quality job by utilising top-of-the-line fixtures and fittings that are built to last. This commitment saves you both time and money in the long run, as you can trust in the durability and reliability of our work.

What to look out for:

  • Clarify whether there is a minimum charge and assess its fairness based on the complexity of the job.
  • Watch out for electricians who might be taking longer than expected to finish the job, by introducing unnecessary complexities.

The Myth: Bigger Companies Cost More

It’s a common misconception that low-priced electrical companies provide the best value. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, companies that offer significantly lower prices often struggle to deliver the level of service that would justify a higher price tag. It’s a Catch-22 situation, as their low pricing limits their ability to provide exceptional service. To break this cycle, it’s crucial to charge prices that enable the delivery of superior service and then work tirelessly to continuously improve that service.

Transparent Pricing at Service Today

Transparent Pricing at Service Today

At Service Today, we pride ourselves on maintaining a transparent and regulated pricing structure. Our pricing is clearly outlined in a comprehensive catalogue book, which ensures that prices are not fabricated on-site. Regardless of your location or the urgency of the job, every customer is charged the same fair price. We prioritise honesty and ethical practices when it comes to our pricing.

Superior Service and Customer Support

Superior Service and Customer Support

In addition to fair pricing, we offer comprehensive support, dedicated customer care, and a guarantee of quality workmanship. Our fixed pricing model ensures that you receive the same exceptional service without any surprises. However, our commitment to providing quality service means that we strive to get the job done right the first time, minimising the need for revisits. In the rare event that further revisions are required, we undertake them at no additional cost. We take every measure to ensure that our customers are satisfied with our work and that their electrical needs are met efficiently and effectively.

Value Over Low Prices

It's important to challenge the notion that low prices equate to superior service. By choosing a reputable electrical company like Service Today, you can have peace of mind knowing that our pricing is regulated, transparent, and fair. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional service, customer satisfaction, and ethical practices. Don't fall for the misconception—invest in an electrical service that prioritises your needs, provides reliable support, and offers guaranteed quality for a fixed price.

Remember, the true value lies in a combination of fair pricing, reputable service, and a commitment to ethical practices. Choose an electrical provider that embodies these qualities to ensure that your electrical requirements are handled with the utmost professionalism and care.

What to look out for:

  • Carefully read the fine print to understand what is included in the flat rate or fixed price.
  • Confirm that the agreed-upon rate covers all necessary materials, labour, and potential unforeseen circumstances.
  • If the electrician is giving you a price, make sure the price is printed in a book and that he is not making it up on the site.
Service Today Company for Electrical Emergency

Need help with a electrical emergency?

The 6 biggest fears people have when they need to call an electrician

Our customer service team speaks to a lot of home owners and residents, just like you. You might relate to the 5 most common fears we’ve heard people have about hiring electricians:
1 icon

Being ripped off

When it comes to pricing electrical work for the home owners market unfortunately electrical prices are not regulated and this does cause cowboys in the market ripping customers off or giving the homeowner the wrong advice. Please make sure the electrician or the company you are using is registered with the Master Electricians Association and if possible try to obtain 3 quotes. You will be safe using a company like Service Today as our electricians are trained, licensed, regulated and backed by a reputable company.

2 icon

Incompetence

A previous negative experience with the quality of the work performed by another electrical company, may impact customers' credibility. Poor workmanship or unprofessional behaviour can lead to damage to their property, additional expenses, or the need for a follow-up repair. With Service Today that won't happen, our team of licensed electricians has over 50 years of combined experience and has been trained with the best and latest technology backed by lifetime company labour warranty.

3 icon

Unreliable

Customers may be worried that electricians may not show up when they are scheduled to, or that they may be difficult to reach or communicate with. This can lead to a frustrating and time-consuming experience, particularly if the electrical issue is urgent. At Service Today we promise same day service, from the moment you book a job with us, you will be booked in our bespoke system and you will receive confirmations and notifications of arrival.

4 icon

Messiness

There is a significant stigma associated with electrical services. It is quite common to hear that electricians will leave customers' homes in a mess, with debris, tools, or equipment left behind. This can make it difficult to clean up and can cause stress and inconvenience for customers. Here at Service Today we use trade protection matts when working in your home which assures your home is protected, we also clean up and take away old parts leaving your home cleaner than when we got there.

5 icon

Lack of Safety

Many customers' concerns are related to the safety of the electrician and the work being performed, particularly if it involves electricity or other hazardous materials. This can include worries about the electrician’s training and expertise, as well as the correct use of safety equipment and protocols. Electricians employed by Service Today go through safety protocols to assure the safety of all customers and employees.

6 icon

Dishonesty

The dishonesty stigma surrounding electricians can be attributed to many different factors: potential hidden costs and unnecessary repairs. Some unscrupulous electricians may take advantage of the customer’s lack of knowledge in electrical matters. This is unprofessional behaviour and will not only drain customers’ pockets, but also erosionate their trust in electricians.

Hiring a local electrician offers several benefits and advantages. Here are a few reasons why you might consider hiring a local electrician:

Convenience and Responsiveness: Local electricians are typically located within your community or nearby, making it easier for them to respond quickly to your electrical needs. They can arrive promptly at your location, minimising any potential delays or emergencies.

Familiarity with Local Codes and Regulations: Electrical regulations and building codes can vary from one area to another. Local electricians are well-versed in the specific requirements of your locality, ensuring that their work complies with the necessary standards. They have a better understanding of the permits and inspections needed for electrical projects in your area.

Knowledge of Local Infrastructure: Local electricians are familiar with the unique electrical systems and infrastructure in your community. They know about common issues that arise in the area and can provide targeted solutions based on their experience working with similar setups. Their knowledge of the local power supply, wiring systems, and potential challenges can be valuable in troubleshooting and resolving problems efficiently.

Support for Local Businesses: By hiring a local electrician, you contribute to the local economy and support small businesses within your community. This can foster a sense of camaraderie and help build a stronger local network of trusted service providers.

Cost Savings: Local electricians may offer competitive pricing, especially when compared to larger electrical companies that have higher overhead costs. Additionally, they may have established relationships with local suppliers, allowing them to source materials at lower prices and pass on the savings to you.

Personalised Service: Local electricians often prioritise building long-term relationships with their customers. They understand the importance of delivering excellent customer service to maintain their reputation within the community. As a result, they are more likely to provide personalised attention, listen to your specific needs, and offer tailored solutions.

While hiring a local electrician can be advantageous, it’s still important to do your due diligence by checking their credentials, licences, insurance coverage, and customer reviews to ensure you’re hiring a qualified professional who meets your requirements.

Unsafe work. One of the electricians’ biggest concerns is electrocution. Work must be conducted in a safe environment and must never work live. Work undertaken by anyone other than a licensed electrician may cause injury or death to those working on the system. There is also the danger of confined spaces, working on roofs and working at heights.  Using the correct tools will prevent minor injuries and even electrocution.

Electricians can deal with power outages, flickering lights, tripping circuit breakers, installation of electrical equipment, damage to circuits, damage to power cords, external lighting, appliance repair, grounding issues, overloaded circuits, old wiring upgrades (rewire), electrical testing and tagging, alarms, CCTV, intercoms, surge protection, and others.

Electricians in Victoria MUST hold a current A-Grade Licence (Certificate III) to undertake any work on electrical systems, with this licence, an electrician may not work for profit. To undertake work and charge for the services, electricians must hold a contractor’s licence (Certificate IV).

In a nutshell, provide power to devices requiring electricity to work. Electricians can work in many fields from domestic, commercial to industrial but the principles are exactly the same. An electrician’s job is to wire-up circuits after the main switch to provide power to lights, machines and appliances.

More importantly, it is an electrician’s job to make sure the wiring and safety devices are all correct and in working order so anything connected to the power will work safely and correctly. Core responsibilities includes:

  • Reading and interpreting plans
  • Carry out fault finding
  • Install voice and data cabling
  • Install electrical circuits in accordance with AS/NZ2018
  • Understand electrical theory to install safe and comp;liant equipment and cabling
  • Install earthing and switchboards
  • Test, repair and maintain

Electricity works by providing ‘force’ to electrons also known as potential. Electricity is defined as the movement of electrons. Amps are the flow rate measured in current and the resistance of a circuit is referred to as Ohms.

There are many sources to generate electricity such as solar, wind, electromechanical generators, steam turbines, etc. Electricity can be made in 2 forms:

  • AC (alternating current)
  • DC (direct current)

All the power coming into a house from the street is AC power, this is what runs around a home to provide power to all devices. Electronics such as computers work on DC current where a transformer is required, this is generally a small box which plugs into a powerpoint which converts the electricity from AC to DC.  Solar power creates DC current which can be stored in batteries. This stored power can be converted to AC power through a transformer.

Apprentices cannot work alone or unsupervised. They must be accompanied by an A-Grade Electrician at all times

YES. All electrical work above extra low voltage (ELV) of 50v AC or 120v ripple free DC MUST be carried out by a supervised electrical apprentice or qualified electrician. Any voltages below the above figures does not require a licenced electrician however it is highly recommended so no damage is done to sensitive equipment due to reversed polarity.

A-Grade electricians with a CEC accreditation can install grid, connected solar panels and claim the rebates (STC’s). Work to be undertaken must be done by an electrician with a CEC certification.

Absolutely, electricians can connect all equipment in the home designed to work on our 230V electrical system. Ceiling fans as a matter or fact MUST be installed by a qualified electrician as they terminate directly onto Thermoplastic-sheathed (TPS).

Depending on the issue, an electrician is required to connect the air conditioning system to the electrical system of the property. If there is an issue with the power to the unit then this is a job for a qualified electrician. If there is an issue with the gas component or circuitry of the unit then this is better left to a mechanical electrician who is trained in these systems.

An auto electrician runs tests on complex computer systems in vehicles and conducts repairs on those systems including rewiring, component replacement including alternators, starters and the like. An auto electrician is certified to work specifically on automotive systems  which are DC circuits and does not need to operate under the AUS/NZ2018 wiring rules. Electricians on the other hand specialise in AC electrical systems including the repair and maintenance of those systems where the voltages can be lethal

Electricians are responsible for the power after the main switch to the property. Any issues with the power coming from the street must be addressed by the power authority as A-Grade Electricians are not allowed to work on power lines from the street.

See why over 215,000 happy customers trust Service Today for Emergency Electrical.
